Prayers of the people: 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B, 14 January 2018

 |  07 January 2018

Introductory reflection

It’s an easy trap to fall into, to look at a work of art or a wonder of nature without really seeing it, without letting it speak to us and change us.  That’s not the looking we find in today’s gospel.  The Baptist looks long and hard enough at Jesus to see him as the Lamb of God.  Andrew and his unnamed companion accept Jesus’ invitation to “come and see” and take time to discover him as Messiah.  Jesus looks deep into Simon and sees him as the Rock.  We begin our journey through Ordinary Time challenged to see with eyes of faith.

The week’s prayer focus

So many voices clamouring to be heard, so many images catching our attention – such is the fare of daily life.  Slow me down, Lord, to hear your whispered word.  Hold me still until I see what you would have me see.

Sample intercessions

These intercessions are offered for selected use at Sunday Mass in the parish alongside those that express local needs and concerns

Presider

Dear friends, in faith we acclaim Jesus as the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.  Let us pray that his saving death will bring new life to the whole of creation.

  1. We pray for Pope Francis, bishop of Rome, and all the bishops of the church, that they will never cease to proclaim Jesus Christ as Son of God and Son of Man,  (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.
  2. We pray for all who are returning to work this week, that they have the prospect of employment that is personally satisfying and of benefit to the community,  (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.
  3. We pray for the baptised of every Christian tradition, that they will be united in prayer and mission and bear common witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ, (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.
  4. We pray for the worldwide Catholic family, that the lay faithful will help develop and promote a renewed ethic of sexuality that is credible for our time,  (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.
  5. We pray for the nation, that progress will be made this year in fulfilling the just aspirations of Australia’s indigenous peoples to be heard, recognised and included,  (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.
  6. We pray for all involved in the youth justice system, whether as offenders, police officers, court officials or prison staff, that they will aim for the most positive outcomes as their common goal,  (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.
  7. We pray for those who work in the tourist industry, that they will convey to travellers a great respect for the beauty and fragility of nature,  (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.
  8. We pray for ourselves, that like Samuel of old we will be attentive to God’s call and ready to respond with willing hearts wherever that may lead,  (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.
  9. We pray for the recently deceased . . . and for those whose anniversary of death occurs around this time, that they will join the assembly of the saints and rejoice in God forever,  (pause for silent prayer)  let us pray to the Lord.

Presider

All-loving God, you made humankind in your own image and breathed your Spirit upon us.  In the waters of baptism, you brought us to new birth and anointed us in holiness.  Keep us true to the name of Christ.  We ask this through the same Christ our Lord.
