Prayers of the people: Sixth Sunday of Easter Year B, 6 May 2018

 |  26 April 2018

Introductory reflection

It was to Peter that the revelation was first given, that the friendship of God was offered to all without distinction, restriction or pre-conditions. His personal vision led straight to another Pentecost. A burst of preaching and praise, a flood of baptisms. Don’t we long for such a fresh manifestation of the power of God? And why not? Perhaps because we could be looking for a convincing sign to excuse us from the work of faith. The sign is always being given, the sign of the wounds in the body of the Risen Lord. They are there for us to see – if we look long and hard enough in faith.

The week’s prayer focus

We pray for all who lay down their lives in the everyday service of others, that they may know themselves to be friends of God.

Sample intercessions

These intercessions are offered for selected use at Sunday Mass in the parish alongside those that express local needs and concerns

Presider

Dear friends, no greater love did Jesus have than to lay down his life for us. Inspired by his free self-sacrifice, let us enfold the world in loving prayer.

Reader

  1. For the people of God around the world, that they will be a joyful sign of salvation for the whole human family and for all that God has made, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

  2. For those who were baptised at Easter, that they will continue to deepen their relationship with the risen Lord and always remain in his love, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

  3. For the Catholic bishops of Australia currently meeting in conference and for leaders of religious congregations, that they will commit themselves resolutely to on-going accompaniment of those who have suffered sexual abuse from church personnel, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

  4. For the Catholic laity of Australia, that their faith in church leadership may begin to be restored by a full apology for its prolonged failure to deal directly and properly with sexual abusers, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

  5. For a new spirit of ethics throughout the nation, that both individuals and organisations will commit themselves to decision-making that serves the good of others, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

  6. For the staff and supporters of the Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations, that their dedicated service will bear witness to our common humanity and our need for one another, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

  7. For volunteers of every kind who devote time and energy to the good of the community, that they will make the world a better place and be enriched in their giving, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

  8. For individuals and families subjected to domestic violence, that they will be freed from their trauma and effectively accompanied on their way to a peaceful new life, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

  9. For the recently deceased . . . and for those whose anniversary of death occurs around this time, that they will dwell in the love of God for ever, (pause for silent prayer) let us pray to the Lord.

Presider

God of all goodness, your Son Jesus called us no longer servants but friends. Through the gift of your Spirit help us to draw many into the circle of your divine love. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
