Prayers of the people: Ascension of the Lord Year B, 13 May 2018

03 May 2018

Introductory reflection

Gone from sight but more present than ever. That is the mystery we celebrate today: Christ among us, reconciling all things in heaven and on earth by the peace he made on the cross (Col 1:20). Present and powerful when the word of God is preached, when sacraments are celebrated in faith, when feet are washed and the poor are served. Obscured and weakened when institutional self-interest or personal ambitions become false gods. Ceaselessly summoning us beyond ourselves, constantly shaping and reshaping us in his image, gracing us with a wealth of gifts, until we become fully mature with the fullness that is his.

The week’s prayer focus

That the church will be renewed as a community of faith in which the many and varied gifts of the Spirit will be welcomed and will flourish.

Sample intercessions

These intercessions are offered for selected use at Sunday Mass in the parish alongside those that express local needs and concerns.

Presider

Dear friends, Jesus commissioned his disciples to proclaim good news to the whole of creation. In the spirit of that charge let us pray for God’s blessing on all that is.

Reader

  1. We pray for the human family. May we make the vital changes to our way of life that are needed to save the earth from fatal damage to its life systems. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  2. We pray for the people of Syria and of every place where there is violence, upheaval and inhumanity. May their cries of distress pierce the hearts of those who hold the reins of power. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  3. We pray for Christian believers around the world. May they work tirelessly for unity in hope, faith, and baptism and be one in the service of all. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  4. We pray for the Catholic bishops of Australia. May their implementation of the recommendations of the Royal Commission help pave the way for a fruitful national synod in two years’ time. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  5. We pray for all mothers and grandmothers. May they be blessed in their vocation of love and gratefully appreciated for all that they give of themselves to their children and grandchildren. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  6. We pray for the unemployed, the homeless, and all who struggle to make ends meet in Australia. May their just needs be met in the Federal Budget measures finally agreed upon. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  7. We pray for the followers of Islam as Ramadan begins. May this month of fasting be a time of spiritual purification and personal renewal for them. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  8. We pray for nurses and health care workers. May they find fulfilment in caring for the sick and frail with both professional skill and sincere compassion. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  9. We pray for the recently deceased . . . and for those whose anniversary of death occurs around this time. May they be raised up on high with Jesus their risen and ascended Lord. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.

Presider

Holy God and Father of all, your Son entrusted his disciples with the task of preaching the good news to every creature. Renew within us the power of your Spirit that we may be truly faithful to our calling. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
