Horton Hears A Who! reflections and activities

Horton hears a whoDr Seuss’ books have been instrumental in teaching children to read for many years. However, they are also full of life lessons.

Read the article Four life-affirming moments in Horton Hears A Who! and take part in the various activities and reflections.

Share your answers in pairs, groups or with the class.

Reflection questions

  • Why does Horton have trouble in convincing others of his quest?
  • Can you think of groups in the community and country who are ignored because no one will hear their voices?
  • Horton responds passionately when challenged on his view, but doesn’t get angry. How do you react when somebody challenges you? What do you think you could do differently or better when somebody disagrees with you, or says something you know to be wrong?
  •  Though the Whos of Whoville are just specks, Horton knows they are essential to the eco-system. What do you do to support eco-systems in your school, home and community?
  • Horton’s conviction that ‘A person’s a person, no matter how small’ ties in with Catholic Social Teaching that asks us to uphold the dignity of all people. What can you do to help those who are marginalised because of issues such as poverty, oppression, hunger or injustice?

 

Activities

Write

Analyse a favourite movie or book in the same way Thea Kurniawan did with Horton Hears A Who! What does your chosen text have to say about Catholic social teaching? Does it talk about friends, the environment, respect for life, peace, conflict resolution? Write a short story on your chosen topic and how it links to aspects of social justice.

Dramatise

Use Horton Hears A Who or another chosen story and make it into a short play. Act out the parts. Be creative and set the play in current times and places.

For younger students

Horton got to know the Whos and respected them for who they are. After listening to Horton Hears A Who! break off into pairs. Ask the other person in your pair to tell you something you didn’t know about them. Each person then takes it in turns to introduce the other to the class and say what you know about them.
