Make sure your parish doesn’t miss out on the next edition of Australian Catholics. It’s going to be a special one.

In 1993, the Australian Jesuits partnered with Vinnies, Catholic Health and the Pontifical Mission Society to launch a new magazine for the Catholic community.

From its first edition, Australian Catholics wasn’t afraid to tackle the important issues facing our Church and society, while sharing stories about Catholics making a difference in the community.

A quarter of a century later, Australian Catholics continues to chronicle the lives of Catholics, and provide a forum for discerning God’s call in the world today.

The Spring edition of the magazine will celebrate the anniversary of Australian Catholics with a look back over the significant events and changes that have taken place in the Church over the past 25 years.

It’s been a time of great change in the Church in Australia, with a decline in vocations and Mass attendances, and an increase in lay leadership of Catholic institutions. The Church has had to face up to the tragedy of abuse, with many questioning its ability to provide moral leadership.

There have also been many joyful moments, including World Youth Day in 2008 and the canonisation of Mary MacKillop. And of course many, many stories of Catholics making a difference in the lives of Australians in times of need.

It’s that Church – ‘the People’s Church’ – that we want to celebrate in this commemorative issue. What are the experiences of Catholics in schools, parishes, social ministries, and health care institutions today? How are we forming lay people to carry out the mission of the Church amid declining numbers of religious? What does ‘being Catholic’ mean to the next generation?

The next edition will be the biggest one we’ve ever published – 52 pages of great stories and interviews.

Please make sure you join us for this special edition if your parish doesn’t already subscribe. Or if you already receive it, consider ordering more copies to ensure that there’s enough for everyone to enjoy the magazine.

Thank you to those who have joined us on our journey over the past 25 years. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to have been able to share in the joys and challenges of the Australian Church over this time.
