It’s a cold Thursday night and I’m anxiously waiting for the phone to ring. My Dad had contacted 3AW to ask if I could interview Phillip Brady.  Unfortunately, he wasn’t available but his producer said that he might call back. A short time later the phone rang and greeting me was a friendly and calm voice. “Hi Ben, it’s Phillip Brady. How are you today buddy?”  “Hello Mr Brady,” I replied, “can I interview you for my article?” “Go ahead Ben, you can call me Phillip if you prefer.”

Students take charge of faith education

15 years ago the Diocese of Parramatta needed more Special Religious Educators to meet the needs of their growing community. They found eager volunteers that primary school students could identify with, as well as an opportunity to create an enduring relationship between Catholic and State schools. Australian Catholics spoke to Cecilia Zammit, Director for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine in the Diocese of Parramatta and some student volunteers about the Student Scripture Teacher Program.

Jefry, a refugee from West Papua, made a dangerous crossing to Australia when he was just 16 years old. Now settled in Australia, he is studying a Masters in Engineering and volunteering at a Fitzroy mission house. He now shares his story in schools, to give an insight into the lives of refugees in Australia. Our young editors interviewed him during their week at Australian Catholics.
