Last year Pope Francis released his encyclical Laudato Si’ (On Care for our common home) and placed protecting the planet and its people as a top priority of Catholic social teaching. Catholic Earthcare Australia, the ecological agency of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference founded in 2002, applauded the Pope’s work. To aid his efforts, Catholic Earthcare recently created a workshop to engage youth with Laudato Si’ and inspire them to take action. Tess Corkish is the Youth Engagement Officer at Catholic Earthcare and leads the Laudato Si’ youth workshops.


Elbows in when wrestling sharks

Writer Martin Flanagan once went fishing with Pat Dodson, who has recently been nominated to the Federal Senate. They hooked a three-metre hammerhead shark. Flanagan writes, ‘Dodson was matter-of-factly leaning over the side of the boat about to slap a headlock on the writhing beast when it snapped the line. Later, for my benefit, he displayed the technique he was going to employ, adding (unforgettably), "Elbows in when wrestling sharks".’


Tackling violence against women

Our loved ones should be the people with whom we feel safest, yet for many that is not the case. More than a million women across Australia have experienced some kind of violence from their male partner or ex-partner since the age of 15. Having seen the attitudes that give rise to these statistics, former AFL footballer Luke Ablett is one of many men taking a stand for women. Luke has worked within Australia and internationally to educate communities about women’s rights to safety and equality. Clare Deignan interviewed Luke about his passion for ending violence against women.
