Popping the bubble: Waking up to climate change

31 May 2016 | Clare Deignan

Last year Pope Francis released his encyclical Laudato Si’ (On Care for our common home) and placed protecting the planet and its people as a top priority of Catholic social teaching. Catholic Earthcare Australia, the ecological agency of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference founded in 2002, applauded the Pope’s work. To aid his efforts, Catholic Earthcare recently created a workshop to engage youth with Laudato Si’ and inspire them to take action. Tess Corkish is the Youth Engagement Officer at Catholic Earthcare and leads the Laudato Si’ youth workshops.

Elbows in when wrestling sharks

22 May 2016 | Fr Andrew Hamilton

Writer Martin Flanagan once went fishing with Pat Dodson, who has recently been nominated to the Federal Senate. They hooked a three-metre hammerhead shark. Flanagan writes, ‘Dodson was matter-of-factly leaning over the side of the boat about to slap a headlock on the writhing beast when it snapped the line. Later, for my benefit, he displayed the technique he was going to employ, adding (unforgettably), "Elbows in when wrestling sharks".’

Tackling violence against women

10 Mar 2016 |  Clare Deignan

Our loved ones should be the people with whom we feel safest, yet for many that is not the case. More than a million women across Australia have experienced some kind of violence from their male partner or ex-partner since the age of 15. Having seen the attitudes that give rise to these statistics, former AFL footballer Luke Ablett is one of many men taking a stand for women. Luke has worked within Australia and internationally to educate communities about women’s rights to safety and equality. Clare Deignan interviewed Luke about his passion for ending violence against women.

Mercy in the heart of justice

26 Jan 2016 | Jemimah McMurray

Our prisons are part of the justice system, where the guilty atone for their crimes. But can they also be places where people discover mercy? We asked Silverwater Correctional Centre chaplain Margaret Wiseman.

Shining a light on mental illness

26 Jan 2016 | Virginia Small

When he was diagnosed with depression, teenager Xavier Eales decided to do something to help open the eyes of other students to these issues, with the hope of making life easier for those who might still be suffering in silence.

Cooking for community

03 Nov 2015 | Michael McVeigh

Julie Goodwin first came to Australia's attention when she emerged as the winner in the first season of Masterchef in 2009. Since then she's appeared on a weekly cooking segment on the Today program, and as a contestant on I'm a Celebrity, Get Me out of Here. Interestingly, however, she started her career as a youth worker, running retreats at Catholic schools and working at a juvenile prison. We decided to ask the Catholic mother-of-three how she combines her passion for cooking with her passion for helping others.
