INTRODUCTORY REFLECTION
‘My father was a wandering Aramean’ is the striking phrase that leads into Israel’s ancient creed. The apostles’ preaching in the Acts of the Apostles (eg, 10:34-43) followed a similar pattern, proclaiming God’s saving actions in human history.
At Nicaea, 1700 years ago, these professions of faith gave rise to the Creed we recite at Sunday Mass. Recalling this history at the start of Lent is a blessing. It reminds us of our profound solidarity in faith with the Jewish community.
Paul models this for us, taking over what Moses said about the Law (Dt 30:12-14) to teach us that the word of faith is on our lips and in our heart. Lent challenges us to ensure that God’s word truly shapes our lives.
